Hobby's is rated as a "Top Ten Delicatessen in America" by Food and Wine Magazine, "The Best Pastrami in America" by farandwide.com, and "Outstanding" by the New York Times. We've been featured in the documentary film, "Deli Man," in the book "The Mom & Pop Store: True Stories from the Heart of America," and WNET's "A Walk Through Newark" with David Hartman and Barry Lewis. Hobby's has also been featured numerous times in The New York Times, The Star Ledger, and Tap into Newark, as well as on Channels 2 and 4 News, Fox and Friends, CNN, WCBS, WINS, BBC, and countless other media outlets across the country.
As the originator and sponsor of Operation Salami Drop, Hobby's - with the help of donations from all across the United States, shipped over 30 tons of salami to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hobby's has also in various ways supported many local groups, including NJPAC, The Newark Museum of Art, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, the NJ Devils Youth Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of Essex, Hudson, and Union, as well as many others. Hobby's has been recognized for our civic support, receiving the Seeds of Hope Award from NJMonthly, and the Corporate Citizen Award from the Essex County Chapter of the American Conference on Diversity. The City of Newark designated the corner of Branford Place and Halsey Street as "Hobby's Plaza," in recognition of Hobby's longstanding service to the community.
Hobby's has served the President of the United States, Senators, Congresspeople, countless local politicians, captains of industry, and a bevy of celebrities, but Marc and Michael always maintain that their most important customer are the local residents and businesspeople of the Greater Newark Area who make up our customer base. With much appreciation, we are proud to serve you.
Located in downtown Newark for over 100 years, Hobby's Delicatessen and Restaurant has been run by the Brummer family since 1962. We still pickle our own legendary corned beef in fifty-gallon stainless steel vats, and customers say our potato pancakes and onion rings are must-haves. Soups are hearty and, of course, homemade. But Hobby's is much more than a place to enjoy hard-to-find, top-quality Eastern-European delicacies - we offer a wonderful line of freshly-made salads, vegetarian and vegan dishes, and gluten-free options. Almost everyone can dine with us! (Alas, we are not kosher.)
